The Origin
CYPRESS HILL PUT WEED IN HIP-HOP. PERIOD.
In 1991, Cypress Hill dropped their debut and changed everything. While the rest of hip-hop was still figuring out what to say about cannabis, B-Real, Sen Dog, and DJ Muggs were already saying it — loud, proud, and platinum.
"Insane in the Brain." "I Wanna Get High." "Hits from the Bong." These weren't just songs — they were cultural declarations. Over 20 million records sold and 50+ countries toured, carrying the cannabis flag before legalization was even a conversation.
When B-Real recorded "Dr. Greenthumb" in 1998, nobody was thinking about brand strategy. He was just being himself. The name stuck because it was true.
