Two gummies, same milligrams, totally different timeline

Grab two gummies off the shelf. Both say 10mg THC on the label. Both look identical. But one is built to come on fast, and the other takes its time. The difference isn't the number on the package — it's how the THC oil got mixed into the candy in the first place. That process is called emulsification, and it's one of the most overlooked details in the whole edibles game.

We talk a lot about strains, terpenes, and lineage here at Dr. Greenthumb's. But the manufacturing side is just as much a craft. When B-Real built this brand, the goal was always the same: premium product made right. And in the edibles world, "made right" starts with chemistry most people never see.

Here's the short version. Cannabis oil is fat-loving — it hates water. A gummy is mostly water, sugar, and gelatin or pectin. Try to stir raw THC oil into that mix and it clumps, separates, and spreads unevenly. Emulsification is the process that forces oil and water to play nice, breaking the oil into tiny droplets suspended evenly throughout the batch. Get it wrong and your milligrams end up uneven from gummy to gummy. Get it right and every piece in the bag carries its fair share.

What emulsification actually does

An emulsion is a mix of two liquids that normally don't combine — think oil and vinegar in salad dressing. Shake it and it blends for a moment, then separates. Add an emulsifier — like the lecithin in a store-bought dressing — and the two stay together much longer.

In a cannabis kitchen, the same principle applies. Manufacturers use emulsifiers such as lecithin, gum arabic, or specialized food-grade surfactants to wrap around droplets of cannabis oil and hold them in suspension. Mechanical force does the heavy lifting: high-shear mixers, homogenizers, and ultrasonic equipment blast the oil into smaller and smaller droplets. The smaller the droplet, the more stable the emulsion and the more evenly the active compounds spread through the batch.

This is why the ingredient panel on a well-made gummy matters. When you flip the pack over, look for the emulsifier listed among the ingredients — sunflower or soy lecithin shows up constantly in edibles for exactly this reason. It's not filler. It's the reason the candy holds its potency together.

Nano THC and the size of the droplet

Here's where nano thc enters the conversation. "Nano" refers to nanoemulsion — an emulsion where the oil droplets have been broken down to a nanometer scale, far smaller than a standard emulsion. We're talking droplets measured in billionths of a meter.

Why does anyone bother shrinking a droplet that small? Surface area. When you break one big oil droplet into thousands of tiny ones, you dramatically increase the total surface area exposed to the surrounding water-based candy. Smaller droplets also tend to stay suspended more stably over the shelf life of the product instead of drifting and clumping.

The emulsified edibles science here is genuinely interesting. A standard edible carries cannabis oil in larger droplets or even as a straightforward oil infusion. A nanoemulsified edible carries it as an ultra-fine dispersion. Both can be dosed to the exact same milligram count — the label math doesn't change — but the physical form of the oil inside the gummy is completely different.

Many people who use nanoemulsified products describe a faster-feeling onset compared to a traditional oil-based edible. We're keeping that in the experiential lane on purpose: how a given person feels a product is subjective and varies from body to body. What the science can say cleanly is that droplet size and emulsion stability affect how the oil is presented to the body, and that's a formulation choice a manufacturer makes deliberately.

Why onset timing lives in the kitchen, not the label

Onset — the stretch of time between eating a gummy and noticing anything — is one of the trickiest things about edibles. With flower, feedback is nearly immediate. With an edible, the product has to travel through your digestive system first, and that's where the variables pile up.

Emulsification is one of the biggest levers a manufacturer can pull to influence that timeline. Consider what happens to a plain oil infusion: the oil largely stays as oil, and your body has to process it the slow way, the same way it handles the fat in a meal. A nanoemulsion arrives already broken into fine droplets in a water-friendly form, which is a very different starting point.

A few things influence onset that have nothing to do with the kitchen, and it's worth being honest about them:

  • Whether you ate. A full stomach versus an empty one changes everything about timing.
  • Your own metabolism. Everybody processes edibles at their own pace.
  • The format. A gummy you chew and swallow behaves differently than a fast-melting product designed to dissolve in the mouth.

The takeaway: two products with identical milligrams can feel like they're on different clocks, and a big chunk of that difference was decided during manufacturing, long before the pack hit the shelf.

How to read this on a real package

You don't need a chemistry degree to shop smart. You just need to know where to look.

Check the ingredient list for an emulsifier. Lecithin (sunflower or soy) is the most common. Its presence tells you the maker took steps to distribute the oil evenly. Some packs will straight-up say "nanoemulsion" or "fast-acting" — those are formulation callouts, not health claims, and they point to a specific manufacturing choice.

Match the milligrams to the COA. Every legit product should have a Certificate of Analysis — third-party lab results tied to a batch or lot number. The COA confirms the potency printed on the label actually matches what's in the batch. This matters more with edibles than almost anything, because uneven emulsification is exactly what causes one gummy to overshoot and another to fall short. A clean COA with tight potency numbers is a sign the emulsification was done well. Look for the batch ID on the pack and cross-check it against the lab document, which many brands host online or link via a QR code.

Note the format. Chewable gummies, fast-dissolve pieces, and beverages all handle their emulsions differently. The format is a clue to how the product was engineered.

Storage protects the work

All that careful emulsification can be undone by bad storage. Heat and sunlight are the enemies. Store gummies in a cool, dark spot — a drawer or a cabinet away from a window beats a hot car every time. Keep them sealed in the original resealable pack to hold out moisture and air, both of which degrade candy texture and can throw off an emulsion over time. A gummy that's gone greasy, sticky, or has visible oil separation on the surface is telling you the emulsion broke down.

Emulsification is the quiet craft behind every consistent edible.
