Walk into any grow room and the first thing a seasoned cultivator does isn't check the lights or the feed schedule — it's flip a leaf over and look underneath. That's where the trouble usually starts. Most of the pests that bother a cannabis plant are small, quiet, and living on the undersides of leaves or down in the top layer of soil, doing damage for days before anyone notices from across the room.

So let's get concrete. The most common troublemakers indoors and out are spider mites, fungus gnats, aphids, thrips, and whiteflies. Each one leaves its own signature on the plant, and reading those signs early is the whole game. A grower who catches spider mites at ten bugs can handle them. A grower who catches them at ten thousand is in for a bad week.

Spider mites: the tiny speck that wrecks a room

Spider mites are the pest most growers dread, and for good reason. They're arachnids, not insects, and they're barely visible — about the size of a grain of ground pepper. The two-spotted spider mite is the one you'll see most often on cannabis. They cluster on the underside of leaves and pierce plant cells to feed.

The first sign is usually stippling: tiny pale or yellow dots scattered across the top of a leaf, like someone dusted it with a fine pin. Turn that leaf over and you'll find the mites themselves, plus their eggs, which look like clear little beads. As a population grows, they spin fine webbing across the tops of colas and between leaves. By the time you see webbing with the naked eye, the infestation is already advanced.

What makes them so tough is speed. Spider mites reproduce fast in warm, dry conditions — the exact environment a lot of indoor rooms run. A single generation can turn over in under two weeks when the room is hot, and populations can build faster than you'd expect. That's why growers who deal with them talk about hitting them in cycles rather than one and done.

Handling spider mites starts with the environment. Because they thrive when it's hot and dry, many growers keep temperatures and humidity in a range that's less friendly to them and use good airflow to disrupt the still, warm pockets mites love. From there, pest control is usually a mix of physical removal, sticky monitoring cards, and repeated inspection of the worst leaves. The key habit is scouting: checking undersides of leaves every few days so you catch the population while it's still small.

Fungus gnats: the soil-line pest

If you see small dark flies drifting up when you water, you've probably got fungus gnats. The adults are annoying but mostly harmless — it's the larvae in the medium that matter. They live in the top inch or two of wet soil and feed on organic matter and, when the population climbs, on fine root hairs.

The telltale signs are the adults hovering near the medium surface and, in a heavier case, seedlings that look weak or stalled for no obvious reason because their young roots are under pressure. Fungus gnats love wet, dense media. Overwatering is the single biggest thing that invites them in.

Growers handle fungus gnats mostly by drying out the top of the medium between waterings, since the larvae need constant moisture at the surface. Yellow sticky cards laid flat or standing near the pots catch the adults and double as a monitoring tool — the number of gnats stuck to a card over a few days tells you whether the population is climbing or falling. A layer of coarse material on top of the medium can also make the surface less inviting for egg-laying.

Aphids and thrips: the sap feeders

Aphids are soft, pear-shaped, and slow. You'll usually find them clustered on new growth and stems, and they come in green, black, and other colors. They feed on plant sap and leave behind a sticky residue called honeydew, which can then grow a black sooty mold. When you see shiny, sticky leaves and a scatter of tiny bugs on the tender new shoots, aphids are a good bet.

Thrips are different — they're slim, fast, and pale to yellowish, and they rasp at leaf tissue rather than piercing single cells. Their damage shows up as silvery or bronze patches and squiggly scars on the leaf surface, often with tiny black specks of frass. Thrips move quickly when disturbed, so growers often spot the damage before they spot the insect.

For both, the response leans on the same fundamentals: catch them early, isolate affected plants where possible, and knock populations down physically before they spread. Sticky cards help with the winged adults. Consistent scouting of new growth — where aphids gather and thrips do their early feeding — is the habit that keeps these two from getting a foothold.

Whiteflies and the general pattern

Whiteflies are tiny white winged insects that scatter into the air like a little cloud when you brush a plant. Like aphids, they feed on sap and produce honeydew. They tend to gather on leaf undersides too, which is a recurring theme — a huge share of pest problems are found by turning leaves over.

Across all these pests, a pattern emerges in how experienced growers handle them, and it's less about any single spray and more about a system. That system is often described as integrated pest management: combining sanitation, environmental control, monitoring, and physical or biological methods so you're not depending on one silver bullet.

Prevention beats treatment

The cleanest grows are the ones that keep pests out in the first place. Sanitation does a lot of heavy lifting: cleaning tools, not tracking soil and bugs in from an outdoor garden on your clothes, and quarantining any new clones before they join the main room. New plant material coming in from outside is one of the most common ways a pest gets introduced, so a lot of growers give incoming clones a close inspection and a quiet corner away from everything else for a while.

Environment is the other pillar. Steady temperature, humidity in a sensible range, and real airflow between plants make the room less hospitable to the pests that like hot, still, or overly wet conditions. Airflow also keeps leaf surfaces moving, which mites and some others don't love. And watering discipline — letting the medium dry appropriately between feeds — directly cuts down on the fungus gnats that need constant surface moisture.

Monitoring ties it all together. Sticky cards placed throughout the room, checked and swapped on a schedule, give you an early read. A cheap loupe or handheld scope lets you actually see mites and eggs on the underside of a leaf instead of guessing. And a grow log matters here as much as it does for feeding: noting the date you first spot a pest, what you did, and whether the sticky-card counts went up or down the following week turns pest control from panic into a process you can actually track.

What to watch for next

After you've dialed in your scouting routine, the next thing to build a habit around is the underside-of-leaf loupe check on a fixed schedule — pick two or three plants per zone and inspect them every few days, logging the date and what you see. Watch new growth for aphids and thrip scarring, watch the medium surface for gnats after each watering, and note your sticky-card counts week over week. Those three logged observations, tracked over time, are what tell you whether your room is trending clean or heading toward a problem while there's still time to act.
