A cartridge is two products sold as one — the oil inside and the device around it. Here is what separates live resin from distillate, what the lab report covers, and what it does not.

A vape cartridge is two products sold as one. There is the oil, which is what you think you are buying, and there is the device around it — the glass, the coil, the threading, the mouthpiece. Most shopping advice covers the first and ignores the second.

Both matter, and they fail in different ways. This is a guide to reading a cartridge properly: what is in the oil, what the lab report actually covers, and where the hardware comes into it.

The oil: live resin and distillate

Almost every cartridge on a dispensary shelf holds one of two things, and they are made with opposite goals.

Distillate is cannabis oil refined until it is almost purely one cannabinoid, usually THC. The crude extract goes through winterization and short-path distillation, separating compounds by boiling point. What comes out is a nearly odorless, nearly colorless oil, commonly advertised in the high eighties to mid nineties for THC.

Live resin starts from flower that was flash-frozen at harvest instead of dried and cured. Extraction runs at low temperature specifically to preserve the volatile compounds that heat destroys. The result is less refined, usually lower in raw THC, and carries the original plant's terpenes and minor cannabinoids alongside it.

Neither is fake. Distillate is real cannabis oil — the THC molecule in it is identical to the THC in flower. What has been removed is everything else.

The thing worth knowing before you pay for a strain name

Distillation strips the terpenes out. So terpenes are added back afterward, for flavor.

That means a distillate cartridge labeled Sour Diesel does not necessarily contain Sour Diesel. It contains distillate with a terpene blend chosen to taste like Sour Diesel. Those added terpenes may be cannabis-derived, or they may be botanical — the same compounds sourced from other plants, since terpenes are not unique to cannabis.

On a live resin cartridge, the strain name means something closer to what you would expect: the aromatic profile came out of that plant.

This matters because the strain name is doing different work on the two products. On one it describes genetics. On the other it describes a flavor target. Our guide to reading a weed label covers why aromatic claims are the part of a label worth trusting and effect claims are not.

So which should you buy

Depends entirely on what you want, and the honest answer is that potency is a bad tiebreaker.

Go distillate if you want maximum THC per dollar, minimal odor, and consistency batch to batch. It is the more predictable product and usually the cheaper one.

Go live resin if flavor and the full chemical profile matter more to you than the percentage on the front. A live resin cart in the seventies can be a more interesting experience than a distillate cart in the nineties, for the same reason a 20% jar of flower with a rich terpene profile can beat a stripped 30% jar. One label detail: some products blend live resin with distillate to bring the cost down. If the full live resin profile is what you are paying for, look for language that says so explicitly rather than assuming.

The hardware is a second product

Here is the part most buying guides skip.

The cartridge is a small assembly of glass, metal and ceramic with a heating coil inside it. Those components sit in contact with the oil, and they get hot every time you use it.

Laboratory research has found that this matters. A 2021 study in Chemical Research in Toxicology analyzed components and collected aerosol from 13 cannabis cartridges bought commercially in Washington State, and found chromium, copper and nickel — plus smaller amounts of lead, manganese and tin — migrating into the oil and into the inhaled vapour phase, at levels the authors described as a possible acute intake above the regulatory standard of multiple governmental bodies.

Notably, smoke and vapour from flower and from concentrate did not produce the same profile. That points at the heating hardware rather than the cannabis.

A 2025 scoping review covering nine studies published through February 2024 reached a similar place: nickel, chromium, lead, cobalt, cadmium and copper released from the structural components of cartridges, with leaching driven by the condition of the parts, the age of the device, operating temperature, the acidity of the liquid, and cutting agents in it. A 2025 analysis in Scientific Reports traced two separate routes into the aerosol — metals dissolved as ions, and metals carried as solid particles — which is why the problem is not solved simply by filtering.

What that does and does not mean

Read that carefully, because it is easy to over-read.

This is product chemistry research. It documents a pathway — metals can move from hardware into oil and aerosol under heat. It is not a clinical study measuring illness in people who used those cartridges, and it does not establish that any particular product delivers a harmful amount. Anyone drawing a health conclusion from it is going further than the research does.

What it does establish is more modest and more useful: the device is a variable, not just a container. Two cartridges holding identical oil are not necessarily identical products.

Why your lab report may not cover this

State testing programs generally test the finished product — oil that has already been in contact with the cartridge. That is the right place to test. But metals leach under heat cycling, and a test of oil that has never been heated in use will not capture what heating produces over a cartridge's life.

So a clean heavy-metals result on a Certificate of Analysis is real information and it is not the whole picture. It tells you the oil passed at the point it was tested.

California's required testing panel is broad — the Department of Cannabis Control requires labs to test for cannabinoids and terpenes, residual solvents and processing chemicals, pesticides, heavy metals, microbial impurities, mycotoxins, moisture content and water activity, and foreign material. Residual solvents matter more for extracts than for flower, since solvents are used to make the concentrate in the first place. Our guide to how lab testing works goes through the panel in detail.

Batteries and the 510 thread

Most cartridges use a 510 thread, a standard connector that lets a cart from one brand work with a battery from another. It is one of the few genuinely standardized things in this category.

Voltage is worth understanding because it interacts with everything above. Running a cartridge hot gives you bigger clouds and a harsher draw, burns through terpenes faster, and pushes the hardware harder. Lower voltage preserves flavor. If your cart tastes burnt, try turning the voltage down before assuming the product is defective.

Variable-voltage batteries cost slightly more and are worth it for exactly this reason.

The 2019 outbreak, and why licensed matters here

In 2019 a wave of severe lung injuries was linked to vaping, and the reporting at the time made it sound like a problem with vaping generally. The actual finding was narrower and more useful.

The CDC identified vitamin E acetate — a cheap, oil-soluble thickener with roughly the consistency of THC oil — as strongly linked to the outbreak. It was being used as a diluent to stretch distillate volume in illicit cartridges. Investigators found it in the lung fluid of EVALI patients and not in healthy comparison participants.

A Minnesota study makes the supply-chain point about as clearly as data can. Vitamin E acetate was detected in illicit THC cartridges seized during 2019, and in none of those seized in 2018, before the outbreak began. The timing of the additive entering the illicit supply matches the timing of the illness.

Rates were also lower in states with legal adult-use markets. One analysis put EVALI incidence 42% lower in recreational-cannabis states — though the same authors found vaping was less likely to be someone's primary method in those states, so supply and behavior are tangled together rather than cleanly separable.

This is not an argument that licensed products are risk-free. It is an argument that the testing requirement is the actual variable. An unlicensed cartridge has no residual-solvent screen, no heavy-metals panel, and no batch record — and counterfeit packaging imitating licensed brands is common enough that the label on an illicit cart tells you nothing at all.

What to check before you buy

  • Identify the oil type first. Live resin, distillate, or a blend — this decides more about the experience than the THC percentage does.
  • Treat the strain name as a claim, not a fact, especially on distillate. Ask whether the terpenes are cannabis-derived or botanical.
  • Scan the QR code and match the batch number to the package in your hand. A report for a different run tells you nothing about this cart.
  • Check pass or fail on residual solvents and heavy metals, not just the potency number.
  • Ask what the hardware is. Cartridges are built from a mix of ceramic, metal and plastic components, and what a shop knows about its own hardware tells you something. If nobody can answer, that is worth noticing.
  • Buy licensed. The heavy-metals findings above are about legal, commercially purchased cartridges. The unregulated market has no testing requirement at all, and the failure modes there are considerably worse.

What is the difference between a live resin cart and a distillate cart?
Distillate is refined until it is almost purely one cannabinoid, usually THC, at the cost of nearly everything else in the plant. Live resin is extracted at low temperature from flash-frozen flower to preserve the original terpenes and minor cannabinoids. Distillate generally tests higher for THC; live resin generally tastes more like the plant it came from.
Does a higher THC percentage mean a better cartridge?
No. Distillate is commonly advertised in the high eighties to mid nineties simply because the refinement process removes almost everything that is not THC. That number describes purity, not quality or experience, and it says nothing about the terpene profile that shapes how a product actually tastes.
Why does my distillate cart say a strain name if the terpenes were removed?
Because they were added back after distillation. The strain name on a distillate cartridge usually describes the flavor target rather than the plant the oil came from. Those terpenes may be cannabis-derived or sourced from other plants. On live resin, the strain name refers to the actual source material.
Can vape cartridge hardware affect what I inhale?
Laboratory research says yes, as a pathway. A 2021 study found chromium, copper and nickel migrating from cartridge components into the oil and the inhaled aerosol, and a 2025 review of nine studies found similar metals released under heat. This is product chemistry rather than clinical research — it does not measure illness in users or quantify individual risk.
Does a clean Certificate of Analysis cover the hardware?
Not entirely. Testing programs examine the finished product, which is the right approach, but metals leach under repeated heating. A clean result tells you the oil passed at the moment it was tested. It is meaningful information and it is not a complete picture of a cartridge's life.
What is a 510 thread?

Often voltage. Running a cartridge hot destroys terpenes quickly and produces a harsh, scorched flavor. Try a lower setting before assuming the product is defective — variable-voltage batteries exist largely to solve this.
