Packing a bowl takes about a minute once you know the order: break up the flower, load it loose at the bottom and a little firmer on top, light one edge, then clear the smoke. The same steps work for a glass hand pipe and for the bowl piece of a bong.
This guide covers each step, how to light a bowl so it lasts, and what to do when one won't draw.
What you need to pack a bowl
- A pipe or a bong with a clean bowl. If you are still choosing one, our guide to choosing a pipe or bong explains the parts and the joint sizes.
- Flower, broken up by hand or in a grinder.
- A lighter or a hemp wick. Hemp wick is a waxy piece of hemp string that catches a flame easily, so you light the wick and use it to light the bowl.
- A screen, if the hole at the bottom of your bowl is wide. This is optional.
- Something thin, like a poker or a paper clip, to loosen the bowl or clear it when you are done.
How to pack a bowl, step by step
1. Break up the flower. You want it evenly broken down but not powdery. Leafly suggests breaking it up by hand or grinding it to a semi-fine consistency, and Verilife calls a grinder your best bet for an even texture. Our grinder guide covers what has been measured about grind size, though those measurements were made on joints, not bowls.
2. Put a slightly bigger piece at the bottom. A small chunk over the hole stops fine pieces from being pulled through. A screen does the same job.
3. Fill loosely, then a little firmer on top. Leafly and Verilife give the same advice: looser at the bottom so air can move, slightly denser near the top. Press gently with a fingertip rather than tamping hard.
4. Don't overfill. Keep the flower level with the rim or just below it, so loose pieces don't spill or fall off when you light it.
5. Take a test draw before lighting. Draw gently through the mouthpiece with no flame. If air moves freely, you're ready. If it feels blocked, loosen the top with a poker.
How to light a bowl: cornering

Lighting one edge instead of the whole surface is called cornering. Leafly's instruction is to tilt the bowl slightly and hold the flame to the edge of the bowl rather than straight down on top of it.
Cornering burns a small patch at a time and leaves the rest of the bowl unburned for the next hit. In a group, that means each person still gets what's called a green hit: fresh, unburned flower rather than a pull through ash. Leafly notes that cornering works in both pipes and bongs.
Keep the flame on the flower only as long as it takes to catch. Glass near the flame gets hot, and so does the top of the lighter, so keep your thumb and fingers clear.
Using the carb and clearing the smoke

Many hand pipes have a small hole on the side, called the carb. Cover it with a finger while you light and draw, and the smoke builds in the pipe. Then, as Verilife describes, lift your finger off the carb and finish your inhale to pull the rest through.
A bong usually clears differently. Once the chamber fills, Verilife's instruction is to remove the bowl from the downstem and inhale to clear it. Some bongs have a carb hole instead, and it works the same way as the one on a pipe.
If your pipe has no carb, there is nothing to cover. Light and draw at the same time, and the smoke comes straight through.
Common bowl problems and fixes
It won't draw. The bowl is packed too tight, or the hole is blocked with resin. Verilife's warning is that overpacking chokes off airflow. Loosen the top layer with a poker, and if that doesn't help, empty the bowl and clean it.
Flower comes through the mouthpiece. The grind is too fine for the hole, or there is nothing at the bottom to catch it. Verilife notes that an underpacked bowl can leave flower in your mouth. Add a bigger piece at the bottom or a screen.
The whole top lights at once. The flame was held over the middle. Next time, angle the bowl and light just one edge.
The bowl is cashed. Verilife defines a cashed bowl as one with no usable flower left, only ash and charred remnants. Tap the ash out into an ashtray before you pack again.
Keeping the bowl clean
Resin builds up in a bowl with use, and a clogged hole is a common reason a pipe stops drawing. Our guide on how to clean a bong covers soaking the bowl and downstem in alcohol and coarse salt, and the same method works for a glass hand pipe.
Bowl, joint or vaporizer?
A bowl needs no rolling, and you can pack as little as you like. Rolling takes more practice, and our guide on how to roll a joint walks through it.
A dry herb vaporizer heats flower without burning it. Our vaporizer explainer covers how that works.
